April 13, 1923 - September 2, 2021
Magdalene (Falcone) Maffei passed away peacefully at Syracuse Home on September 2nd after suffering a stroke in August. She was the 8th (of 10) children, born to Giovanni Falcone and Mary (Andrella) Falcone on April 13, 1923. She grew up on the North Side of Syracuse, graduated from North High School, and had a brief career in retail prior to her marriage. She and Ernest Maffei (the “love of her life”) were wed at St. Peter’s Church, Syracuse on July 19, 1945. Together they celebrated 67 years of marriage and raised four children. As their family grew, they moved from a two bedroom flat to a five bedroom colonial. Magdalene had a flair for decorating and gardening, so the family home was beautifully maintained - both inside and out. She loved everyone, and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, relative, and friend to all who knew her. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and writing poetry, cooking, crafting, gardening, golf, bowling, and shopping. She was a devout Catholic who practiced her faith daily, and was a lifetime communicant of St. Peter’s Church. She was a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 30 years and at Loretto for many years. She resided briefly at The Hearth on James in 2016, joining her sister/neighbor, Mattia. She joined the Syracuse Home community at McHarrie Place in July 2016. Soon after, Mattia became her roommate once again. “The Sisters” were a dynamic duo at Syracuse Home, loved and recognized by all as “social butterflies.” She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Maffei; parents, Giovanni and Mary; sisters, Mary Angela Falcone and Mattia (James) Kinslow; brothers, Joe (Evelyn), Larry (Grace), Sam (Irene), Don (Tess), Rosario (Marie), Anthony (Ned), and John (Alice); and nephews, Gerald and Mark Falcone. She is survived by her children, Ernie (Nancy) Maffei, Donna (Frank) D’Eredita, Darla Maffei, and Debra Maffei; grandchildren, Kristin (Bob) Monterville, Julie (Jason) Breed, Lisa Maffei Weaver, Ross (Rachel) D’Eredita, Jess (Chelsey) D’Eredita; 11 great-grandchildren; Godchild, Neil Falcone; and many beloved nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family. Magdalene’s family is eternally grateful to the staff and volunteers at Syracuse Home for their excellent care, kindness, and compassion during Mom’s five year stay. A funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 8th at 11 a.m. at Farone & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1500 Park Street, Syracuse, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Noon at St. John the Baptist Church and entombment at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Magdalene’s memory may be made to Syracuse Home Association (Resident Activities Program), 7740 Meigs Road, Baldwinsville, N.Y. 13027.
