Sheila Margaret (Ryan) Guinto
January 30, 1942 - June 29, 2021
Sheila Margaret (Ryan) Guinto, 79, of Syracuse, passed away at Crouse Hospital on Tuesday. Born in Long Island and raised mainly in Truxton, Sheila worked as a nurse at Cortland Hospital and later Community Hospital in Syracuse. After raising two sons she worked for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse and spent many years at Holy Cross Church in DeWitt, where she was also a communicant. She was predeceased by her mother, Martha Ryan and her father, John T. Ryan as well as her brother, Johnny Ryan and sisters, Martha Ryan and Kay Christian. Shelia is survived by two sons, Peter Guinto of Syracuse and Joseph (Rachel) Guinto of Washington, DC; as well as her sister, Anne (Dick) Cutia of Etna; step-sister, Nancy Rocco of Avon, Connecticut; sister-in-law, Marilyn Ryan of Cortland; and many nieces and nephews. Sheila was of Irish descent but learned to cook Italian food after marrying into a Sicilian family. So she raised her two sons mostly on mostaccioli and meatballs. She also made legendary lasagna. She enjoyed exchanging quips with family and friends and recounting old yarns. But at large gatherings she often had to leave soon after meals because of an unfortunate and undiagnosed “allergy” to dish soap. Her smile and laugh will be missed. A funeral mass to celebrate Sheila’s life will be held on Saturday, July 3rd, 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Dewitt, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Friends and family may call on Saturday prior to the mass from 10 to11 a.m. at the church, 4112 E. Genesee St., Syracuse. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Cortland.
